1/4 cup shortening
1 cup light brown sugar (packed)
1 egg

3/4 cup flour

1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Heat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease and flour a square pan 8 X 8 X 2.

Melt shortening over low heat.
Remove from heat and blend in brown sugar; cool.
Stir in egg.

Mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add to brown sugar mixture.
Stir in vanilla and pecans.

Spread in prepared pan.
Bake 25 minutes, until a light touch with finger leaves slight imprint.
Don’t over bake! Cut into (2 X 1 inch) bars while warm.

Makes: 28 

Special note:  Squares keep soft and moist if stored in a tightly covered container.
